The Blue Holes of Belize!

The Blue Holes of Belize!

Belize is a jewel with many hidden treasures, so much treasures that some treasures are often confused with others. The Great Blue Hole of Belize, which was a contender of the 8th wonders of the world, is often confused with the Blue Hole National Park. These two sites are NOT connected and are two very different tour experiences.

Let’s explore both to see which suit you best.

The Great Blue Hole is located 50 miles offshore into the Caribbean Sea at the Lighthouse Reef Atoll, while the Blue Hole National Park is located inland in the Jungle.

The Great Blue Hole, according to the Washington Post, is said to hold the answer to the collapse of the Mayan Civilization,

Maya Civilisation

while the inland Blue hole at The Blue Hole National Park was formed by the collapse of an underground limestone cave which formed the sink hole.

The diameter of the circular reef area of the Great Blue Hole, stretches for about 1,000 feet and provides an ideal habitat for coral to attach and flourish.

While at the Blue Hole National Park, the lush green jungle provides a resting spot for birds, especially emerald green Jacamars and Blue-crowned Marmots, who use over-hanging vines.
