October 12th- A National Holiday in Belize Columbus Day traditionally commemorates the landing of Christopher Columbus in the New World on October 12, 1492. I can even remember Columbus Day from grade school as a day of singing rhyming songs (“In 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue”) about a man who discovered the new world, who was brave and strong. After much debate, It was deemed a controversial celebration, as it awakened Europeans to this part of the world with his discovery ultimately leading to many culture clashes and wars as the Europeans moved in. Therefore, Belize decided to celebrate what began as a commemoration of Christopher Columbus’ discovery of the Americas, to Pan American Day which is now feted as one of Belize’s National Holidays. Pan American Day is nationally recognized as our country’s day of honoring the migrations of the Mestizos and indigenous cultural groups from the Yucatan into Belize. This group came to Belize looking for a calm and peaceful land, free from conflict where they could settle, thereby creating the country we know today. That migration was truly the forging of a rich cultural diversity for our nation. Today Belize, with Garifuna, Mennonites, Lebanese, Chinese and more adding to the celebrations, is a melting pot of culture. Belize appreciates and respects all of its cultures! October 12th is truly a day for Belizeans to celebrate the life and culture of their own country. Most Belizeans do this by gathering with friends and family, playing music (and dancing to it), lighting the grill for a bar-b-que, taking a couple beers, and simply relaxing in a cool atmosphere!
