Many remain wonder-struck after their visit to this archaeological site. Even celebrities like Tamera Mowry, star of Sister Sister Show and host of The View, are hung-up on checking this site off their bucket list. Xunantunich is, undeniably, one of the most popular Maya temples in Belize.
With recent new discoveries at Xunantunich, often referred to as “Stone Woman” or Maiden of the Rock,” it is sure to help secure the position of being the most popular Maya temple in years to come.
About a week ago the very first tomb was uncovered at Xunantunich, and what makes this find even more amazing is the fact that it is the largest tomb to date that has ever been discovered in Belize. Exploring inside the tomb revealed the skeletal remains of a male Maya Leader that archaeologists believe to be in his late 20’s / early 30’s. Alongside the skeletal remains were clay pottery, jade beads, vases, numerous other Maya artifacts, and more interestingly the remains of an animal, believed by archaeologists to be either a deer or jaguar.
We applaud the discovery team as this is a wonderful accomplishment for Dr. Jamie Awe, NICH and the country of Belize. It provides greater insight into the Maya civilization while offering our visitors the chance to experience more amazing wonders of Belize when visiting one of Belize’s most popular Maya Temples.
