Actun tunichil muknal (atm cave) tour

Belize Tours - BirdwatchingFor the fit and adventurous this is hands down the most talked about cave in Belize. Discovered in 1989 and open to the general public since 1998, the ATM cave is a full 3 miles deep. After a 45 minute hike in the cool tropical rainforest and across three streams you enter its hourglass-shaped mouth for a 30 foot swim in water at most 15 feet deep, to land on a rock shelf. The next 2,000 feet is a journey of well over a half hour filled with many sharp & slippery edges, water depth alternates from just covering your toes to portions where only the tallest won't need to swim. Along the way you pass many calcite formations, a few which have undergone minor sculpting (purpose unknown), by the Maya. After this distance, you ascend 7 to 10 feet to a shelf above the river. From this point forward is shallow, where you walk barefoot (with socks only).

As you go forward you encounter increasing amounts of pottery of all sizes, in conditions from near intact to completely shattered. Catalogued within the cave are over 1400 artifacts - pottery, tools, and ceremonial items dating from 1 to 1000 AD - including over 200 vessels. While over half of all the items appear in plain sight in small pools, they are also tucked away between stalagmites, on small, high shelves or other unusual places. The artwork found in Actun Uayazba Kab (a section of the cave) is unmatched when compared to any other site. The deeper in the cave you go, the more recent the activities of the Mayas were. Use of the cave by the Mayas of the Late Pre-Classic (1 to 250 AD), tended to stay near the mouth of the cave, whereas later generations moved further into the cave, perhaps believing that this would bring them closer to the lords of Xibalba. The closer to the gods, the better the chance the ceremonies would be answered. Pottery of all sizes and styles lay within the cave, all broken to release the spirits contained within.

A not-so-common artifact is human remains. So far, remains from fourteen individuals have been found; 7 adults & 7 children, all under the age of 5. These are not the ceremonial burials found in the other two caves in the area, but are sacrificial victims. They were all likely sacrificed in the hopes of appeasing the gods and bringing rain. Young victims, particularly females, were important for rituals to be "zuhui" - pure & uncontaminated in the eyes of the gods. The Crystal Maiden was a young woman of about 20 years old whose complete remains lie at the back of the cave. It is believed that she was clubbed and left for dead, and with the passing of time she has been cemented to the floor in a layer of brown calcite. (To reach her final resting place, you must climb aluminum ladders mounted on a sheer rock face!) Don’t choose this tour if you are not an adventure lover, it is not for the faint hearted!

Timetable: By Request, 24 hr notice needed
Duration: Approximately 8 hours
Difficulty: Moderate
Departure: 7:00 am

Our fully trained caving guides rig a system of rappelling ropes for your descent to the basin below. The first 10 feet provides the adrenaline, the next 200 feet provides an unforgettable experience and sights to behold, and the last 100 feet takes you down through the rain forest canopy. The sink hole is not actually black, but you can't see the bottom from where you start. Once you're at the bottom you rest with a delicious picnic lunch. The next question is...how do we get you out???Climb of course!

SOUTHERN BELIZE TOUR

Belize Tours - BirdwatchingJoin us as we venture further south to Toledo District, Belize’s most southern district. Our first stop will be at the Belize Spice Farm and Botanical Garden that started 20 years ago. Here we will take a one hour guided tour getting to see the country’s largest vanilla and black pepper farms as well as teak, mahogany (the national tree), rosewood and sandalwood trees.

After we leave the spice farm, we continue further south to the Maya Archaeological site, Nim Li Punit. This site is well known for the amount of stele found there. In Kekchi Maya, Nim Li Punit translates to “The Big Hat” which is named for the longest stele depicting a figure wearing a large headdress. Nim Li Punit is located at the foothills of the Maya Mountains within the drainage basin of the Rio Grande. Many beautiful vistas can be seen from here.

Before visiting Lubaantun, the largest Mayan Archaeological site in southern Belize, we stop in Big Falls Village for a delicious lunch. Lubaantun is known for its unusual style of construction; no visible mortar binds the limestone blocks together! It is believed that the strength of each structure lies in every hand-cut stone, which demanded precise measurements and shapes to fit snugly to its neighboring block.

Join us on this tour to learn about the Mayan culture and civilization as well as to experience the aromatic tour of the spice farm.

Sittee river nature cruise

The Sittee River Tour takes you down the Sittee River, which is one of the deepest and most scenic rivers in Belize. The Sittee River was the main route used in sugar export when the sarpon sugar mill was in operation in the early 1900s. Your path along the river will take you through a series of both small rapids and on peaceful waters. Along the way you will see a variety of birds such as the white egret, herons, hawks, kingfishers, hummingbirds or toucans to name a few. Iguanas usually adorn the overhanging trees and occasionally you can view and listen to howler monkeys. Optional stops along the way include swimming in the river, checking for crocodile resting on the banks of a nearby lagoon, and encircling a natural island of fruit trees.

Another option is to view the Sittee River at sunset! Let the sinking sun’s colors romance you and your partner as your captain takes you on a pleasant evening cruise. The birds will be singing to you while you are sipping your wine and nibbling on your deliciously prepared snacks.

monkey river tour

A visit to Monkey River is truly a unique experience.

Around 8 am, your guide will pick you up by boat, and you travel through the lagoon and in amongst the red mangrove fringe forest along the coast, habitat of the manatee and many species of birds. Most of the trip is in protected waters and will be relatively smooth. It takes about 35 minutes to reach the mouth of the river.

The guide points out numerous iguanas, turtles and birds as you motor slowly up river. Not long into the trip the jungle erupts with the bizarre sounds of the Black Howler Monkey as the troupes communicate with each other to declare their territory. Nothing you read could prepare you for the adventure of hearing these monkeys for the first time; you just have to experience it!

An hour into the trip, disembark to venture into the jungle and "see the howlers close up."Learn about the different plants and trees as your guide cuts a new trail and wanders (sometimes through water) further from the river. The sound of a troupe of howler monkeys as they burst out in a raucous chorus tingles the hair on the back of your neck! It's hard to believe an animal that weighs 35 pounds can sound as big as an elephant.

Return to the mouth of the river and Monkey River Village for a genuine Creole lunch. After lunch you will take a guided tour through the small village before boarding the boat to start the trip back to the resort. You definitely don’t want to miss out on this tour!

May Flower Waterfall Hiking Tour & Zip-lining Combination Tour

Head towards the Maya Mountains where orange groves will lead you to banana plantations to dense tropical rainforest. Once at our destination, your guide will lead you briefly through the unexcavated Mayan ruins site, which has several ceremonial mounds as well as an ancient ball court. Archaeologists are still excavating and  piecing together the history of this modest Mayan ruin, which is over grown by the jungle. After the ruins, we will traverse to Silk Grass Creek and venture into the jungle. Orchids, birds and lush vegetation abound!

The hike to Antelope Falls is truly worth the effort. The falls are about 1,000 feet and cascade down a massive rock face. A steep trail leads to the top of the falls where the views over the jungle and out to the sea are truly breathtaking. A short distance from this point you will find a smaller waterfall with a beautiful pool, ideal for swimming.
