The Maya civilization has permanently marked the landscape of Belize as visible in these Maya sites:

Xunantunich

Xunantunich – a Mayan word which translates to “maiden of the rock” or “stone woman” is one of Belize’s most popular Mayan ruins located in the western part of our country and provides adventure from start to finish. Visitors often rave about the hand-cranked ferry used to cross the Mopan River to get to the site.

Xunantunich Belize

This site consists of six major plazas with more than 25 temples and palaces including the second tallest Mayan structure in all of Belize, standing at 133 feet. Xunantunich also has an onsite museum which houses archaeological finds from the site, including pottery, jewelry and an interesting burial site with a tomb recently discovered in July 2016. We anticipate there’s many more artifacts to discover at Xunantunich, which will continue to secure its popularity rank. This site has surely attracted many travelers, even celebrities like Tamara Mowry, host of The Real, has already checked this site off their bucket list. Have you? If not, don’t worry as a visit to the Xunantunich Maya Ruin is included in our all inclusive adventure package!

Lubaantun and Nim Li Punit Tours

This combination tour offered at Belizean Dreams Resort allows travelers a change to experience the beauty of Southern Belize as they journey to our southernmost district of Toledo to explore not one but two Mayan sites with bonus visits to the Belize Spice Farms and Botanical Garden.

Nim Li Punit or “the big hat” in English and is located in the foothills of the majestic Maya Mountains. Although one of the smaller sites in Belize, it is well known and appreciated by travelers for the spectacular plaza of stelae which consists of twenty-six large stone monuments, one being the largest carved stelae in Belize. The center of the site is made up of three groups, the ceremonial center which consists of two plazas and a ball court, and two civic and elite residential groups. This fascinating site is also known for the second largest jade object in all the Maya world – a jade chest pendant that was found at the site.

Your second site includes exploring Lubaantun or “place of the fallen stones” which is famous for the Crystal Skull which was said to have been discovered onsite. This remarkable Skull was created from a single crystal of quartz. One of Lubaantun’s most astonishing features is that it was constructed with dressed limestone blocks with no mortar biding them together. This ceremonial site consists of eleven major structures grouped around five main plazas including a Maya ball court and residential area.
